Dogs cool down mainly by panting, which is much less efficient than sweating. Flat-faced breeds, overweight dogs and older dogs struggle most, but any dog can overheat on a hot day.
Five simple rules
- Walk early in the morning or late in the evening
- Test the pavement with your hand: too hot to hold for five seconds is too hot for paws
- Always carry water on walks
- Never leave a dog in a car, even with the windows open
- Give them shade and a cool floor at home
If your dog is panting hard, drooling and wobbly, cool them with tap water and call us on the way.
